Tuchel Seeks Jude Bellingham's Aggression Provided England's Star Leaves His Ego Outside.

A single omission was enough. Another and it could have seemed spiteful from the England manager, who is much too clever not to realize that claiming the World Cup trophy demands help from Jude Bellingham, even if it is also on the midfielder to adapt to the strategic frameworks and player rankings essential with England now that he is back in the manager's welcoming fold.

Tuchel seeks Bellingham's edge, his fire, but it is a matter of channeling it constructively. Individual quality is important but the squad have learned the hard way that there is a price to pay when stardom dominates. Still, a message has been sent.

The midfielder had much to ponder after not being selected of last month’s squad. He watched the national side secure their spot at the upcoming World Cup in his absence. He watched the young talent shine as a high-pressing No 10. He heard Tuchel mention loving the team's dynamism and ethics. Naturally, he has responded in top form, scoring crucial goals for his club against their rivals and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; leaving him out again would have put his tournament chances hanging by a thread.

The hope is that the manager will have a midfielder concentrating on pressuring the opposition instead of his own colleagues. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is no advantage to creating tension with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time not playing has made him realize that an international career is a valuable, uncertain thing. The coach, for his part, can now throw a protective shield around the 22-year-old after demonstrating that he is not afraid to take tough decisions.

“There is no problem regarding him, and no concern with the character,” the German said. “Bellingham displays a competitive streak. It takes a sharp mentality to achieve greatness that he reached. Everyone must support him and create an environment where he can channel his drive towards opponents and in pursuit of success we are working towards as a team.”

Bellingham took up the spotlight at the team news conference for the upcoming final group games against one opponent and Albania. Who else? Well, what about Phil Foden? This is another prodigious playmaker requiring coaching. He has not played for England since March and has found it hard to hit the heights this year but the boss had to consider the 25-year-old after how he played in his club's victory versus Borussia Dortmund recently.

The issue, however, is how to use the attacking talents at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eze deserve their spots and there will be compelling reasons to include another youngster once he is fit after a fitness issue. Is selecting five No 10s to the tournament be excessive? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the correct balance at Euro 2024. He made concessions by squeezing both stars into the same XI, cramping the captain's style as a result.

It is hard to see the current manager making the same mistake if it disrupts the offensive structure. Space exists for one No 10, with quick attackers on the flanks. Clarity is beneficial. He is in as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the returning Wharton will compete with another player as a No 6. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for Foden, who must play through the middle. Tuchel wants him near the striker. “It is illogical to ask Foden: ‘We want you in the team but there’s no space in your preferred role, could you fill in at left wing? Or the right wing?” he said. “He is to feature in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I have this vision regarding him for a long time. I think it matches his abilities the most.”

He agreed there are occasions when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “You feel as if, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy for the game, then clearly an issue exists, be it his role, the setup, it's unclear.

“In my opinion he is additionally so used to playing for his club in a certain structure, with a clear task. Believe he benefits a lot from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly should I turn? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? What are my to defensive duties?”

Tuchel talked about Bellingham bursting through for easy finishes and Foden scoring goals from 18 yards. He said he has a longlist of many candidates. Several players, others, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his fine form for City at defense. Interest abounds.

Leaving out of the striker means there is no direct replacement for the captain in this squad. Interestingly, he suggested using the playmaker as a false 9 versus Serbia or Albania. Other options, the United forward, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives should he be absent. With qualification secured, this is a moment for trying new things.

Meanwhile, it is also a chance to develop Kane’s relationship with his teammate going. It's surprising that one must look back to Bellingham assisting Kane to net in an international match versus Scotland in September 2023 to find the sole instance in many appearances for England when the pair linked up for a score. The coach will know that the two stars only exchanged the ball once during England’s draws with Denmark and Slovenia at the Euros. Their partnership is lacking.

“At this point eventually it becomes the responsibility of the individuals,” Tuchel said. He does not shy away to be blunt. There is still a sense of Bellingham being on trial. He cannot even be guaranteed to start versus Serbia and Albania. The manager desires him committed but he will be watching him closely. Leave the ego at the door. Doing so could turn a powerful England team into an more effective one.
