At least 64 civilians were killed in a police operation against the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's past.

Four police officers were included in the fatalities during the police action in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives said. More than 80 individuals were detained.

Violent conflicts erupted when about 2,500 police forces moved in on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization reacted using armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and using drone-dropped explosives, officials stated.

The International human rights organization said it was "shocked" by the police operation, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Operation Impact

The informal settlements adjacent to Rio's airport is considered to be the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.

Government representatives stated a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Numerous individuals were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Community members have likened the elevated neighborhood - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "battlefield" since the operation began.

Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.

The Red Command group have been expanding their control throughout the region, expanding narcotics distribution networks and control of the hillside favelas.

Rio's police reported in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were captured in the operation, in addition to numerous weapons.
