Aaron Rai Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed remarkable composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off after a rollercoaster final round of play.
The Englishman sank a crucial birdie putt from just over eight foot to seal the victory, repeating his sole prior tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off victory against Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Excitement
Rai started the final round with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, 67 final round that included seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger edged a stroke ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the last hole.
Playoff Climax
This set up a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in winnings.
